Nanospring™ mats are extremely durable. Flexible substrates can be rolled and folded without the Nanosprings becoming detached. This robustness allows post growth processing, shaping, and forming.

While the as-grown silica Nanospring show catalytic properties for certain reactions their functionality can be markedly enhanced by coating them with metal nanoparticles and/or metal oxides. GoNano Technologies, Inc has developed processes for coating Nanospring mats with metal nanoparticles and metal oxides. Metal nanoparticles we have deposited include nickel gold and platinum. In all cases, the nanoparticle size and shape can be controlled during processing and by subsequent heat treatment.

The Nanospring mats can also be conformally coated with metal oxides, such as zinc oxide, which is illustrated in the figure to the left. Other oxide coatings include electrical insulators such as aluminum oxide and high dielectric constant materials such as titanium dioxide. Metal nanoparticles can be subsequently deposited on the oxide coatings to create hierarchical nanostructures tailored for specificity for certain reactions.
